Independent, autonomous, ambitious and self-reliant. These were skills I felt would stand me in good stead. I thought I knew what I really wanted to do—the answer to my career crisis would be why not start my own online business.
Being your own boss is a great aspiration for young people and there is plenty of assistance available to help turn a good idea into reality. Entrepreneurship is about seizing new opportunities and taking risks which is why it is so vital to the economy and what makes it such an exciting career choice.
For some people the word entrepreneur automatically brings to mind Ken Envoy and his class – those high flyers who set up and run more successful businesses than most of us could manage in several lifetimes. In reality an entrepreneur is anyone who chooses to go it alone and make the most of a business opportunity for themselves no matter how big or small.
For more and more people this is becoming a legitimate career choice. The days are gone when you had to have years of business experience under your belt before you might even consider taking the plunge with a startup of your own: these days everybody’s doing it. And if you’re reading this, you’ve already taken your first steps to joining them.
People make the choice to become entrepreneurs for a variety of reasons. For some it will be an opportunity to escape their ordinary nine-to-five schedule and to commit their working lives to something which is a lot closer to their heart. For the ‘lifestyle’ entrepreneurs the most important part of the deal is not how big their business turns out but the effect it has on their lives.
The possibility of earning large sums of money is last on this list quite deliberately.
This is important for most people but it is often a secondary goal (admittedly a close second) when compared to the increased freedom, additional spare time and sense of achievement that running your own business can provide.
In the USA alone there are estimated to be 25,000,000 people who currently run a home business of some kind.
Over 5,000,000 of these home businesses produce an annual gross revenue of between $100,000 to $500,000. We’re not talking about spare time practices here!
The statistics seem the same worldwide. While more and more people are rejecting “conventional” working patterns, and discovering that the conventional working patterns – a job for life, mutual respect and trust etc. – are no longer an indication.
No matter how much your potential your business might have for making money, unless you believe in it, how can you expect anyone else to? A bit of self-belief can go an awful long way.
Hand in hand with passion comes commitment to the cause. From day one you’ll need to work incredibly hard, often overlook friends and family to get your business off the ground. You will need to ask yourself whether or not you are prepared to make that kind of sacrifice and also question whether you can keep yourself motivated to put in those long, long hours. If you are the type of person who’s New Year’s resolution only lasts for three days, you might want to think again whether you’ve got what it takes, especially when situations do not go your way.
And, as you have probably realized, you will go through all of this on your own. While escaping the office might seem like a dream come true now you could soon be longing for a bit of mindless small talk and repartee. You’ll need to dig deep to find the kind of emotional resilience to keep you from losing the plot when you realize that no-one is around to lend a helping hand.
So while you will not need qualifications on paper, understand not just anyone can become an entrepreneur. But if you think you’ve got what it takes then it could be one of the best decisions you ever make.
Why An Internet Business?
Starting an internet business has many advantages over a more traditional small business:
*Low start up costs.
*A worldwide market.
*The ability to work part time in the first instance, until your business takes off.
*The possibility to automate certain tasks by the use of software.
*The ability to take orders online, to collect cash and to arrange for goods to be shipped without having to handle them.
The low start up cost alone makes it possible for many people, who would otherwise have no realistic opportunity to start a business, to get up and running quickly and cheaply. The low costs also mean that there is considerably less risk involved and it should be easier to recover your investment more quickly. Now these are very significant advantages. |
